Jonathan Mensah becomes Columbus Crew's first African captain

Ghanaian defender Jonathan Mensah has been named as the captain of Major League Soccer side Columbus Crew ahead of the new season, Ghanasoccernet reported.

Mensah was handed the armband in the first game of the season against New York City FC where they secured a 1-0 win on Sunday; and as of Monday, he was handed the captain's role on a permanent basis.

The 28-year-old becomes the first African player to be the leader of the Black & Gold Crew and he also becomes the first non-American since Federico Higuain since 2013.

According to reports, Mensah has continued to show great character that makes him a respectable leader on-and-off the pitch as well as in the dressing room.
