Raja Casablanca has officially condemned the racist incident that marred their 2-0 win over TP Mazembe in a CAF Champions League quarterfinal first leg in Casablanca.
The victory was tarnished by a social media post by a group of ultras that depicted a Wydad fan as a primate and neanderthal. The image had a primate clad in Wydad jersey with a TP Mazembe crest. Wydad fans were supporting the Congolese club on Friday evening.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Raja distanced itself from the actions of the group and insisted that they promote inclusivity and respect to all races.
“The Raja Club Athletic wishes to recall that it rejects and has always rejected all forms of racism and that it promotes the values of equality and respect for others in accordance with the values that it endorses and that it has always defended. The Raja Club Athletic has also always worked to strengthen the bonds of friendship with all the players in African football, and has forged ties of sincere brotherhood with several clubs in Africa and elsewhere, " wrote the Casablanca club in a press release published on its official website.
Raja will travel to Lubumbashi on Wednesday to take on Mazembe in the return leg on Friday. Security and food concerns have seen the Moroccans include security agents and a chef in the travelling party to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
