Derby 0-3 Man United: Red Devils book quarterfinals date with Norwich after routine win in Derbyshire

Manchester United sailed through into the FA Cup quarterfinals after easing to a 3-0 win over Derby County on Thursday night.

An Odion Ighalo brace and a Luke Shaw goal were enough for United to book a place in the last eight in a relatively comfortable night in Derbyshire.

Team news

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made six changes to his starting lineup, with only Lindelof, Fred, Shaw, Fernandes, and McTominay retaining their places from the side that drew 1-1 away to Everton on Sunday.

Captain Harry Maguire was forced to sit out due to an ankle injury he picked in training, with Juan Mata handed his armband.

Ighalo got his second start in a United shirt, while there were also starts for Jesse Lingard, Diogo Dalot and Eric Bailly.

Derby got the game underway after Wayne Rooney's team talk in the huddle, but it was the visitors who settled fast into the game.

Despite United controlling the match in the opening few minutes, it was Derby who got the first real chance of the match, but Louie Sibley's shot crept inches wide of Romero's post.

The hosts then settled into the match and caused United all sorts of problems, and came closest with a Wayne Rooney freekick from the edge of the box which was expertly saved by Sergio Romero.

United kept knocking on Derby's doors and the goalkeeper was once again called into action on the 31st minute, saving an Odion Ighalo shot from close range.

He, however, couldn't keep them out a minute later as Luke Shaw pounced on a loose ball to fire an instinctive shot past the goalkeeper, even though they benefited from an element of luck in the build-up to the goal.

United's confidence shot up following the goal and came close to adding a second on the 34th minute, but McTominay's effort from the edge of the box was blocked and somehow Derby survived.

United then increased their grip with a second on the 41st minute, Odion Ighalo scoring a second following a beautiful Luke Shaw pass and they led 2-0 going into the break.

Derby then started the second half on the front foot and seemed to play with more freedom that lacked in the opening half.

Just like the first half, United settled again and Luke Shaw came close to adding a third but his shot from a crisp Bruno Fernandes pass was expertly saved.

Mata then saw his shot saved on the 66th minute as United went all out in search of a third, and it arrived a few minutes later.

A neat move from the visitors ended with Mata squaring the ball for Ighalo, who smashed it into the roof of the net in a second attempt after his first was blocked on the line for a 3-0 lead.

Jack Marriot then came close to pulling one back for the Rams, but his effort from the edge of the box following a perfectly weighted Rooney ball was pushed round the post by Romero for a corner.

Romero then denied Rooney a memorable goal as he saved the former Reds' freekick from the edge of the box.

Jesse Lingard came close to adding a fourth late on, but there were no more goals as United booked a date with Norwich in the quarterfinals.
