Turkish side Trabzonspor terminates John Obi Mikel contract

Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor has officially terminated John Obi Mikel's contract by mutual agreement.

It is not, however, clear whether the top Turkish side decided to end their relationship with the former Nigerian skipper over his comments on coronavirus pandemic and his reluctance to continue turning out for the club.

On Saturday, the former Chelsea star said that he was not comfortable playing football amid the Covid-19 outbreak in Turkey and across the globe. Turkey has 47 confirmed cases.

“There is more to life than football. I do not feel comfortable and I do not want to play football in this situation. Everyone should be home with their family and loved ones at this critical time. The season should be cancelled as the world faces such turbulent times," he said.

The coronavirus COVID-19 is affecting 163 countries and territories around the world and 1 international conveyance (the Diamond Princess cruise ship harboured in Yokohama, Japan). It has infected at least 196,000 people and killed almost 8,000.
