Uganda Cranes coach targets semis at 2021 AFCON

Ugandan national team coach Jonathan Mckinstry is targeting a semi-final finish at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Irishman says that the only way his tenure will be considered a success is if Cranes finish in the last four in the next AFCON that is due to take place in Cameroon early next year.

“What I would consider as a successful tenure as Cranes coach is if we made the semi-finals of AFCON because then you know we shall be in the medal bracket,” he told Radio City’s sports show Xtreme Sport.

McKinstry has been in charge of Cranes for ten games winning nine and drawing one. He was recently preparing the local-based players for the cancelled African Nations Championship (CHAN) and had summoned foreign players for the 2021 African Nations Cup qualifiers.

“Currently, the team is making a lot of improvement and the players are really adjusting very well. We haven’t really been tested at major tournaments so far, but I am certain when we do, we can make a good account of ourselves,” he added.

The Covid-19 outbreak has disrupted sporting calendars with nations suspending football activities. CAF cancelled CHAN that was to take place in Cameroon starting early next month as well as AFCON qualifiers.

Uganda suspended sporting activities on Friday as the country reported its first case of coronavirus.
