LFP: Ligue 1 Season to end by June 30

The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) announced on Monday that the 2019-20 Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 seasons will conclude by June 30.

LFP has July 15 as a backup should the league not end in the stipulated time with the French top two tiers having been on a standstill due to the coronavirus pandemic since March 13.

The move has been instigated since the June 30 date is the day that many player contracts expire and it would be interesting to see how the same players will be handled if the league won’t come to a close by then.

Reports from France indicate that the meeting of the LFP Board of Directors also discussed the impending financial crisis that will affect clubs due to the lack of revenue during the football shutdown; the body expected to come up with measures to help their clubs.

Apart from that, the LFP “will also support all government initiatives that will allow high-performance athletes to be able to train again as soon as possible.”

To date, France has had more than 20,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and 862 deaths.
