Chelsea forward Olivier Giroud has admitted that he was very close from leaving Stamford Bridge in the January transfer window.
The French international says that he held talks with Italian side Inter Milan as he sought to find his new home.
The 33-year-old former Arsenal attacker found playing time scarce at Chelsea under Frank Lampard. Inter were among a group of teams including Tottenham Hotspur and Lazio who were keen on landing the veteran France striker.
The World Cup winner claims he was sure to leave Stamford Bridge, before an injury to team-mate Tammy Abraham saw a potential move to the San Siro blocked.
Giroud says that he spoke to Antonio Conte over a move to Inter. The Italian had also lured him from Arsenal while at Chelsea.
"Everyone knows that the sporting project of Inter was the most interesting for me. Lazio and Tottenham also looked for me. At one point, it was a question of where I wanted to go to play. I spoke to Conte on the phone," Giroud told Telefoot.
