Former Italy international Luca Toni looks back at his fondest moments with Fiorentina

Former Italy international striker Luca Toni opened to his former club Fiorentina about his best moments and what it meant for him to play for the La Viola.

On the squad between 2005 and 2007:

“A fantastic group had developed and that was what made the difference. I was the first Italian player to win the European Golden Shoe, but the credit belongs to the whole squad and the coach.”

On why he chose to wear number 30 on his jersey:

“At my unveiling, I chose No.99 because [Christian] Rigano had the No.9, but then when it came to officially choose I said: ‘Give me the No.30 because I plan on scoring 30 goals.’ I ended up with 31.”

His thoughts on the club's new owners:

“I’ve spoken with the owners and they made a great impression on me. They have enthusiasm and ideas in terms of building the new training ground and stadium.”

On his best goal for the club:

“The volley from outside of the area against Catania.”

On his fondest memories in Florence:

“The evening after the end of the 2006/07 season, when we’d battled back from a big points deduction. We had a great laugh and I ended up with cake on my face!”
