Borussia Dortmund secured a 1-0 victory over visiting Hertha Berlin in a Bundesliga match held at Signal Iduna Park on Saturday evening.
Emre Can scored the only goal in the second half as Dortmund closed the gap to seven points between themselves and the league leaders Bayern Munich who beat Bayer Leverkusen 4-2.
Dortmund had to win here if they were to have any chance of catching the leaders, who now need just two points to claim the title. The hosts were without star man Erling Haaland who remained in the treatment table with a knee problem while Mats Hummels missed the clash through suspension. The defender picked up his fight yellow card of the season against Paderborn.
After a goalless draw in the first half, Dortmund opened the scoring in the 57th minute through Emre Can's elegant strike. Sancho clipped a direct ball into the ball and Brandt cushions a perfect header into the path of Can. He could panic with the bouncing ball but he controlled a brilliant side-foot effort into the bottom corner.
After defeats for both Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Monchengladbach and RB Leipzig drawing at home with Paderborn, this was a fantastic chance for Dortmund to take charge of the Champions League qualification places – and they took it.
