Bonucci defends Ronaldo after Coppa Italia penalty miss

Juventus were held to a goalless draw against AC Milan in the Coppa Italia semi-finals last night, in a match that saw Cristiano Ronaldo miss a controversially awarded penalty.

Andrea Conti was penalized for the slightest of handballs at the 13th minute and after a VAR check, the referee awarded Juve a penalty which the Portugal international stepped up to take, but he hit the post.

Leaping to the defense of his teammate, Leonardo Bonucci has highlighted the importance of the 35-year old in the Juve team.

“Even the greatest miss,” Bonucci told Italian TV channel Rai Sport.

“Cristiano is always important for us. He increases the pressure on opponents’ defenders. He was unfortunate today and [Gianluigi] Donnarumma did well.

“We’ll see a great Juventus and a great Ronaldo again.”

The Bianconeri, however, proceed to the final of the competition on away goals, and they will know their next opponents today, after Napoli takes on Inter Milan.
