Van Ginkel in talks with Chelsea over a new contract

Marco van Ginkel has revealed he has held talks with Chelsea over a possible new deal.

The Dutch midfielder was once highly-rated but has failed to live to the expectations, partly due to persistent injuries.

His struggles have seen him make only four first-team appearances for the London club, but he is willing to continue fighting for a place in the side.

Van Ginkel arrived from Vitesse Arnhem in 2013 in an £8 million deal and was seen as the right replacement for Frank Lampard, who was nearing the end of his days at the club.

But he has since spent most of his time away on loan, and it's surprising he would want to extend his stay.

"My agent, Karel Jansen, is in talks with Chelsea about a new contract for me. I am very happy at this show of confidence in me by the club," he said during an interview with AD

"It is quite something when a club tries to keep a player who has been out injured so long and in these uncertain times as well.

"If a deal can be done I expect to make my comeback in Chelsea's Under-23 side.

"Otherwise I will be a free agent this summer, and we'll look elsewhere.

"The prospects look very good. I have worked really hard to come back.

"I can now train four to five times a week. I was on the point of rejoining group training in March before the coronavirus outbreak."
