Dele Alli urged by Jose Mourinho to fight for his place

England midfielder Dele Alli has been urged by manager Jose Mourinho to fight for his place after being dropped in the club’s last two matches.

There had been reports that the relationship between the pair has been rocky but ahead of their clash against Shkendija in the Europa League tonight, Mourinho said it was up to the player to prove himself.

"There is a tendency now when a player performs or the player doesn't perform to give responsibilities on coaches. I feel 99 per cent of the responsibility is the player. Me and my staff have one per cent of the responsibility.

"Since Dele arrived from MK Dons he's had ups and downs. He had fabulous periods and other periods where he disappeared from the top level.

"Players have to prove on the pitch with their performances how good they are. Tomorrow he is selected - no decision whether he is starting or on the bench. But when selected, he has chances to play," Mourinho said.

Asked if Alli would be at Spurs by the end of the transfer window, Mourinho said: "I believe (he will). I can even say that I'm convinced that he will be."

Alli has been linked with a season-long loan move to PSG with Spurs keen to bring on Jesse Lingard to Spurs but that will largely depend with Alli’s position.
