Liverpool 3-1 Arsenal: Reds breeze past the Gunners to maintain perfect start to the Premier League

Liverpool maintained their perfect start to the season with a 3-1 win over Arsenal at Anfield on Monday night.

Sadio Mane, Andy Robertson, and Diogo Jota got the goals for the Reds, while Alexandre Lacazette scored Arsenal's lone goal.

Team News

Jurgen Klopp was forced to make last-minute changes to his team, with new signing Thiago Alcantara missing out due to a minor injury.

Joe Gomez replaced Jordan Henderson in midfield and was the only change from the team that started at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea last week.

Arsenal recalled Kieran Tierney, and David Luiz into the starting lineup, with the rest of the team remaining largely unchanged.

Action, Goals.

The Reds controlled the match from the first whistle and came close to grabbing the opener on a number of occasions, with Trent Alendre-Arnold crashing an effort against the crossbar on the 23rd minute.

Arsenal were happy to sit deep and catch the Reds on the counters, and it seemed to work as they took a surprise 25th minute lead against the run of play as Alexandre Lacazette released Maitland-Niles on the wing before sprinting towards the goal for the return pass.

It came, and Andy Robertson gifted the Frenchman the opportunity to score with a poor clearance, which the forward took, applying the faintest of touches to guide the ball past the already committed Alisson Becker.

The lead however lasted exactly 147 seconds as Liverpool hit back immediately with their first attack after the restart.

Naby Keita was brought down just by the touchline but the referee played advantage, and Mohamed Salah cut inside of Tierney before firing goalward, an effort that was parried by Bernd Leno only to fall to Mane, who tapped into an unguarded net.

Andy Robertson then atoned for his mistake by giving Liverpool the lead on the 34th minute, latching on to an Alexandre-Arnold cross which he chested before lifting it over Leno for a 2-1 lead.

The second half was a carbon copy of the first, with Liverpool patiently building and trying to pick spaces between the Arsenal defence.

Lacazette though wasted two glorious chances to pull the Gunners level, with Alisson the difference on both occasions, even though one was flagged for offside.

The second chance, on the 63rd minute, was expertly created by Dani Ceballos, who put the Frenchman through on goal with a brilliantly-weighted ball, but the keeper managed to smother the shot and Liverpool survived.

The hosts then missed a couple of chances to add to their tally, with Salah, Van Dijk, and Wijnaldum all coming close.

It was, however, new signing Jota who stepped off the bench to notch a third on his Premier League debut with two minutes to go, and it came having missed a glorious chance a few minutes earlier.

The Gunners had no response as the hosts picked yet another win to ensure they rolled on with a third win in as many matches.
