Holders Real Madrid were knocked out of the Supercopa de Espana following a 2-1 loss to Athletic Bilbao on Thursday evening.
Raúl García scored a brace for Bilbao with Karim Benzema pulling one back, a goal that turned out to be a consolation for the hosts.
Bilbao took the lead in the 18th minute through Raúl García. The visitors had a glorious opportunity going forward and Garcia latched onto the ball before sweeping a cool finish past Courtois.
In the 37th minute, the visitors were awarded a penalty after Vazquez clattered Martinez as he dunk into the box to collect a cross. It was a spot-kick, plain and simple, no VAR about it, and the defender was booked for his troubles.
Garcia stepped up to take and produced a coolly composed finish from the spot to double Bilbao's scoring.
In the 73rd minute, Madrid had the ball in the net but the flag was up as Benzema was adjudged to have poked home the finish from close-range in an offside position. There was a VAR check and the goal stood, putting Madrid back into the game.
Bilbao are now through to the finals of Supercopa de Espana and will face Barcelona who eliminated Real Sociedad on penalties.
