English Premier League side Manchester United have been handed a boost in the pursuit of defender Pau Torres.
ESPN via MEN reports that Villarreal will be happy to part ways with Torres for a fee closer to £43m as they accept that he wants to move on in his career and join a leading European club.
The report adds that United would have to fend off interest from Real Madrid to secure Torres's signature, although the prospect of a cut-price deal could persuade the Red Devils to step up their pursuit of the 24-year-old, who is said to be their primary defensive target.
Torres is contracted at the club until 2024 with his club able to play hardball on letting him go but due to the club’s financial situation, they would be willing to listen to offers for Torres and some of their players.
United are in the market for a left-footed central defender who can partner Harry Maguire with Torres said to be the favorite to be picked among a list of six potential candidates.
Torres has made 34 appearances for Villarreal across all competitions this season, netting twice in La Liga and once in the Europa League.
