Wesley Sneijder on Arsenal & Onana: "Arsenal has gone down hill"

Arsenal are interested in signing Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana this summer, but Wesley Sneijder believes the goalie should aim higher than the Gunners.

The 25-year-old is close to joining Arsenal, but a sum has still to be agreed upon between the north London club and Ajax.

Former Ajax and Holland player Sneijder now believes Onana can leave Arsenal for Barcelona or Real Madrid.

“I expect him to go,” the Dutchman told Voetbal International Live, relayed by Voetbal Primeur.

“I think he is a great goalkeeper. European top? Yes, definitely.

“I’d rather not see him at Arsenal. It’s a fantastic club, but it has gone downhill in recent years. I’d rather see him play at Real Madrid or FC Barcelona."

Any potential move for Onana is complicated by the fact that the goalie is presently serving a 12-month suspension, which was recently reduced to nine months.

In October of last year, the Ajax player failed an out-of-competition doping test, which revealed the presence of the banned drug Furosemide in his urine sample.

Following a review of the case, the Court of Arbitration for Sport shortened Onana's suspension, allowing him to begin training on September 4 and return to competitive football two months later on November 4.
