Spain equal biggest winning margin in EURO history

Spain roared into the last 16  of the EURO 2020 tournament with a 5-0 thumping of Slovakia on Wednesday evening.

The former world champions were winless from their opening two matches, but jolted to life against the Slovaks at the Estadio La Cartuja de Sevilla, in Seville.

Alvaro Morata missed a 10th-minute penalty, but Aymeric Laporte and Martin Debravka's own goal gave them a 2-0 lead in the first half before Ferran Torres, Pablo Sarabia, and another own goal sealed the huge win.

The victory put them in a select club of teams to have won EURO games by five goals – along with other European heavyweights including France and the Netherlands.

Here are the teams to have achieved similar feat;

  • 1984 group stage: France 5-0 Belgium
  • 1984 group stage: Denmark 5-0 Yugoslavia
  • 2000 quarter-finals: Netherlands 6-1 Yugoslavia
  • 2004 group stage: Sweden 5-0 Bulgaria
  • 2020 group stage: Slovakia 0-5 Spain

Spain will next face Croatia in the Round of 16, a match set for Monday 28 June in Copenhagen.
