As Manchester United slumped to a humiliating Old Trafford defeat against Aston Villa in the Premier League, Cristiano Ronaldo had a telling reaction to Bruno Fernandes' penalty miss.
During the early kick-off, the blockbuster summer signing, who had scored four goals in his first three games during his second tenure at the club, was shunned for penalty duty.
Following his Portugal international teammate's effort, the 36-year-old was the first to run into the box, but after seeing it clear the bar, he looked to the ground in anguish.
Despite his own sadness, Ronaldo made a point of approaching Fernandes and giving him a comforting pat on the back, knowing how upset his teammate must have been.
Aston Villa goalscorer Kourtney Hause was the man who gave away the spot-kick, and he admitted to Match of the Day his relief: "When they gave the penalty I was devastated and fuming with myself.
"Looking back I didn't make myself any bigger. I've tried to bring my arms in so when Bruno blazed it over the bar I was relieved. I think it was justice in the end because I don't think it was a penalty.
"The rules are the rules. All we can do as players is play the game and play it well and whatever decision the referees and VAR want to give we have to get on with it."
"We had the better chances. We haven't really had to defend too tough as a team but we've come away with the three points and that's all that matters. We're happy."
