Kenya Premier League defending champions Tusker FC opened their title defense on the wrong foot, going down 1-0 against AFC Leopards on Sunday afternoon.
Saad Muosa scored the lone goal after just 19 minutes at the Thika Sub County Stadium, condemning Robert Matano's side to their first defeat of the 2021/22 season.
The hosts were the better side in the first half, with their first attack coming after just two minutes, but the Brewers' goalie came out to make a timely save and deny Caleb Olilo.
Olilo came close again in the seventh minute but he could only side-net his effort after Leopards lodged a lightning counter-attack.
Tusker could not respond to Leopards' attacks and could have fallen behind in the 12th minute but Saad's effort bounced off the post as the visitors survived again.
It was not to be long though before they could find the breakthrough, and it came courtesy of Saad in the 19th minute.
The forward found some space on the edge of the box and unleashed a ferocious hit, easily beating the goalkeeper.
Matano made three changes at half-time as he sought to turn the match around, bringing in Kevin Monyi, Rodgers and Macharia for Shami Mwinyi, Eric Zakayo, Njuguna John.
This did not bear fruits, even though it improved their overall play.
They got the chance to equliase from the spot after Muchiri was brought down inside the box, but his effort greased the outside of the upright.
Macharia came close again as the match wore on, but despite their efforts and throwing everything at the hosts, they could not break them.
The match ended in a win for Ingwe, leaving Matano with a lot to ponder over ahead of their next match.
