Raul Jimenez scored his first goal since October 2020 as Wolves beat Southampton 1-0 in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
This was the Mexican's first goal since fracturing his skull in a match against Arsenal, and it earned them their second win of the 2021/22 Premier League season.
The striker was at his best from the first whistle, hassling and chasing every single ball.
His hard work and persistence paid off in the second half as he was picked out by an excellent Jose Sa ball, created some space to shake off one defender before turning and slotting into the back of the net.
The first half lacked the spark though from both sides with very few chances created.
Wolves’ best effort of the opening 45 minutes came within the first 45 seconds, as Nelson Semedo was played into space down the right, following good work from Daniel Podence and Jimenez, and having ran in on goal, the Portuguese wing-back tested Alex McCarthy in the Southampton goal, but the keeper was able to palm the ball out for a corner.
The hosts however thought they had taken the lead deep into first-half injury time when Nathan Redmond fired a shot high into the net and past Sa, but the assistant referee’s flag was up for offside.
The hosts came out the stronger of the two sides in the second half, but Jiminez showed his class just after the hour mark as he gave the visitors the lone goal.
Both sides created a number of clear chances as the match wore on, but none could find the net a the Wolves picked maximum points away.
