Defender Samuel Umtiti's nightmare at Barcelona may soon be over after it emerged that OGC Nice is interested in acquiring his services.
As reported by Le Quotidien du Sport, Nice is interested in signing Umtiti from Barcelona in the upcoming transfer window but would only consider a move if the Frenchman terminates his contract with the Catalans and becomes available for free.
Barcelona have been willing to do the same since last summer but the Frenchman was against such a move and reports indicated that he wanted a certain compensation package if he was to leave something that Barca wasn't willing to do.
The 28-year-old is said to be keen on a move this summer as he angles to boost his chances in the 2022 World Cup with France having not been part of the team for some time now due to his lack of playing time at his club.
Nice is said to have established contact with the defender’s entourage to inform them of their interest and ask them to negotiate with Barcelona over giving the 28-year-old a letter of freedom. If he becomes available for free, the Ligue 1 outfit would be willing to offer the center-half a contract with fixed and variable components containing performance-related bonuses, keeping in mind his physical problems.
The 2018 FIFA World Cup winner played just once all season in 2021/22 and struggled with injuries for the most part of the campaign.
