SP CUP: Holders Gor Mahia bundled out by Tanzanian minnows

There will a different team to take on Everton in the SportPesa Cup after holders Gor Mahia were bundled out of the tournament by debutants Mbao FC after a 1-1 draw and 4-3 in post-match penalties defeat in a match staged at the Dar es Salaam National Stadium on Wednesday 23rd January.

Juma chance

Looking to exert their dominance in the tournament having won the previous two editions, Gor Mahia started the game with much intent as Lawrence Juma who has rediscovered his form squandered a golden chance inside the opening 10 minutes when he fired his effort wide after being played through by George Blackberry Odhiambo.

Ssekisambu chances

Gor Mahia almost broke the deadlock in the 19th minute when Lawrence Juma delivered a cross that pulled Metacha Mnata to a last-ditch save after Dennis Oliech’s header but his save fell to Erisa Ssekisambu who tapped the ball into the net but was incorrectly flagged for offside. Hassan Oktay was sent the stands after protesting the decision.

Oliech was again in the thick of things when his cross kissed the upright but the ricochet was kind to Ssekisambu as his headed effort was easily gathered by Mnata.  Gor Mahia went into the half time break without a lead for the first time since the inception of the tournament.

Oliech goal

Hassan Oktay seemingly not impressed with the opening 45 minutes made a double substitution introducing Shafik Batambuze for Geoffrey Ochieng and Boniface Omondi for George Odhiambo. The changes brought the desired the effect as Ssekisambu’s shot was handled in the box by Amos Charles, up stepped Dennis Oliech who wrong-footed the keeper to nonchalantly slot the ball into the net for his third Gor Mahia goal.

Ngalema goal

Mbao FC who were making their debut in the tournament scored their first goal in the SportPesa Cup when Samuel Onyango’s headed clearance fell to Ally Kombo whose thunderbolt was guided in by substitute Abubakari Ngalema. This becomes the first goal Gor Mahia have conceded in the tournament since it started back in 2017.

Mbao survived a late Gor Mahia onslaught to hold the defending champions to a 1-1 draw and send the game to penalties.

Francis Kahata, Jaques Tuyisenge, Boniface Omondi scored while Harun Shakava and Shafiq Batambuze missed their spot kicks. David Mwasa, Pastory Athanas, Gervas Rambo and Erick Mulilo scored for Mbao as Ibrahim Ashimu missed his spot kick.
