Chelsea recorded their first away win of 2019 and have one foot in the last 16 of the Europa League after a 2-1 win over Swedish side Malmo in a Europa league tie staged on Thursday night in Sweden.
Malmo was to win a corner in the first minute as a shot from the left by Rieks deflected out off Azpilicueta. They took it short to Safari, who dodged past Willian and then crossed to the far post; Jorginho making an important block at the expense of another corner.
In the fifth minute, Chelsea came knocking again with Emerson and Willian combining nicely down the left before flipping a pass forward for Barkley, who scampered to reach it at the byline. He pulled the ball back, hoping to find Giroud, but a Malmo defender gets to it first and clears.
With the tricks and trials, Chelsea efforts were to pay off in the 30th minute when Barkley gave them the lead. Pedro curled over a routine cross from the right. Bengsston made a mess of trying to cut it out, missing the ball completely. Barkley reacted quickly to take the dropping ball under control and then sort out his feet and slot into the net from eight yards; the London based side heading into the break in the lead.
In the same fashion as the first half, Chelsea continued to knock with Giroud laying the ball back nicely to Jorginho in the 48th minute. The midfielder considered opening fire from 25 yards but then turned to his right and slide the ball out to Azpilicueta, whose low cross was cleared.
Malmo looked weary as the game went on and Barkley was enjoying the show. On the 66th minute, the Englishman made a jagged run infield from the left and the slipped a pass into Giroud at the edge of the area and continued his run in anticipation of a return ball. Giroud duly obliged and Barkley in with another scoring opportunity pulled a shot that was deflected over the bar by a lunging defender for a corner.
The pressure kept on coming for Malmo and Chelsea were to double their lead in the 59th minute through a lovely counter-attacking goal. Barkley led the charge from midfield before feeding Willian to his left. The Brazilian ran into the box, danced past a defender and aimed a low pass to Giroud, who helped the ball into the net from close range with an artful flick.
Malmo was not going to go down without a fight and pulled a goal back ten minutes from time. Malmo who had looked out for the count suddenly hit a powerful blow thanks to a rapid counter-attack too. Rosenberg did well to collect the ball wide on the right and then pick out Christensen scampering through the middle, with Kovacic struggling to keep up, Christiansen took a one touch before slotting the ball past the advancing Kepa from 16 yards but Chelsea held
