AC Milan extended their recent impressive Serie A form on Friday night with a comfortable 3-0 drubbing of Empoli at the San Siro.
The Rossoneri come into the match with the chance of extending their five-match unbeaten run against an Empoli side that had won only once in their last five outings.
Gennaro Gattuso's men controlled the encounter from the start but were unable to break down a solid Empoli defense that ensured the match went to the break scoreless.
It didn’t take long after the resumption for Milan to take the lead when Hakan Calhanoglu teed up on form Krzysztof Piatek inside the box who kept his cool to score low into the middle of the goal to make it 1-0.
Milan found the second goal two minutes later courtesy of a cheeky lob by Franck Kessie over Empoli’s goalkeeper Bartlomiej Dragowski after brilliant work by Samu Castillejo to pick him out inside the opposition’s crowded box.
Milan found a third goal in the 67th minute, this time Castillejo connecting an Andrea Conti superb pass into the bottom right corner to put the result behind any doubt.
Milan were still in the hunt for a fourth goal that finally came in the 78th minute only for Fabio Borini’s strike to be ruled out for offside after a VAR check.
The result now means AC Milan trail third-placed city rivals Inter by just a single point as the race for Champions League football heats up.
