Barcelona's number ten is the nemesis of English teams on the biggest European stage

Lionel Messi's astonishing goal numbers defy logic and he seems to enjoy claiming victims outside of LaLiga more and more as into his 30s.

The legendary Argentine started slowly against sides from the Premier League in the initial stages of his career but he's more than made up for it in recent seasons, kickstarting his impressive numbers with a four-goal haul against Arsenal in 2010 when he was still short of his 23rd birthday.

Messi's record against EPL sides 🐐

The Barcelona captain's double against Liverpool last week ensured that he now has goals against all of the traditional top six sides. He scored a double against Tottenham in the group stages this season and memorably bagged a brace at the Nou Camp against Liverpool. His quest tonight is to propel Barcelona smoothly to another Champions League final. Here are his goal-returns against England's elite:

  • Arsenal - [9]
  • Manchester City -  [6]
  • Tottenham - [4]
  • Chelsea - [3]
  • Liverpool - [2]
  • Tottenham - [2]

All in a day's work for the Argentine who's also provided numerous assists against the same opponents.

Messi in 2018/2019 🎯

Once again, Messi has posted astonishing numbers this season. Before kickoff at Anfield tonight, he's notched 48 goals across all competitions for Barcelona and assisted 16 more. To create some perspective, only in 2014/2016 & 2016/2017 did he notch more LaLiga goals, showing that there's no sign of the 31-year-old slowing down anytime soon.

Another factor to consider is that Messi has assumed a play-making role in the side, creating assists and dropping deeper to string things together for Barcelona, making his goal-return all the more impressive. He's also stunned the world with his free kicks this season. There were memorable strikes against Villarreal, Atletico Madrid and then Liverpool, his 600th career goal.

Messi is the first player in history to score 40 or more goals in ten consecutive seasons. Let's enjoy the brilliance while we can.
