Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane believes the Belgian Second Division is below Percy Tau - the player should rather be playing in places such as the CAF Champions League or Europe's top leagues.
Mosimane fine-tuned Tau at Sundowns before the player moved to Royale Union Saint-Gilloise on loan from English Premiership side Brighton & Hove Albion.
Mosimane made his comments in reaction to the player’s Player of the Year award win this week.
“For me I am happy that Percy went to Europe because he always wanted to go to Europe,” Mosimane said to SuperSport.
"It is important that he went to play football in Europe to prove that he can play there and that is what is important to me. On the tactical side‚ I don’t know if that league made him a better player than playing in Champions League here‚" he said.
“What is he doing there?” Mosimane continued.
“If Percy doesn’t get to the English Premier League‚ then I don’t know. Maybe you guys (media) must put pressure and they must give him the work permit.
The 2016 CAF coach of the Year further suggested Tau play at Europe’s other top leagues where there is no strict work permit rules.
"Can’t he go to La Liga‚ Bundesliga or Serie A‚ the boy is a top player.”
"In the Champions League there is Ramadan Sobhi who rejoined Al Ahly from Stoke City in England and that is the level.
“Percy could have done much better in the Champions League and competed for the Africa Player of the Year‚ you know what I am trying to say.
"In Belgium‚ it is not my story but I happy that I supported him to get there and he left at the right level.
Mosimane concluded by saying Tau will continue to inspire Bafana in the coming AFCON 2019.
"He is still at a right level‚ the two goals that he scored for Bafana is what we want‚ let him go to the African Nations Cup and score against Ivory Coast.”
