Jose Mourinho reveals why Ajax could not win the Champions League
Former Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho believes that Ajax could not win the UEFA Champions League because they lacked a quality coach.
Ajax had a superb run in the Champions League this season, knocking out holders Real Madrid and Juventus before being eliminated by Tottenham Hotspur in the semi-finals. Erik ten Hag's men had a 3-0 advantage heading into the half time in the second leg but a strong comeback from Spurs that saw Lucas Moura score a hat-trick dumped them out of the competition.
In an interview with L'Équipe, Mourinho revealed that Ajax had a quality squad but lacked a top-notch coach to enable them to win the Champions League, "When they played against [and beat] Real Madrid and then against Juventus, I said: 'It's not difficult to win against Ajax'. They have reached an incredible performance level, with a young, open mentality.
"But to win a competition like the Champions League, you must also have strategic quality. You can have a phenomenal team but the moment arrives where strategy takes the team to a higher level, and it has a name: that of the coach. "Some coaches don't have that strategic vision."
