Sheffield Wednesday are reportedly in contention to sign Sunderland defender Adam Matthews on a free transfer in the summer.
Football Insider reports that the club have expressed their interest in landing the right-back ahead of his contract due to expire in June.
Matthews has made approximately 28 appearances across all competitions for Sunderland this season which pushed the team to League One playoffs as well as the EFL Trophy final.
The full-back has a proven track record having played at the highest level in the Champions League with Celtic and also accumulated 14 caps for the Wales national side.
Sunderland would be keen to keep hold of Matthews, but they accept any chance of keeping the defender depends on whether or not they win promotion back to the Championship.
News of Matthews’ availability on a free transfer has alerted a host of Championship clubs in addition to Wednesday, while there is also interest from abroad with several Dutch sides keeping tabs on the defender’s situation.
