Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi is set to bag third successive European Golden Shoe for the highest domestic league goalscorer.

This comes after Paris Saint Germain’s Kylian Mbappe, the only player who was a realistic challenger finished the season three behind. The Argentine has netted 36 goals meaning Mbappe needed to score 4 goals to beat the Barcelona ace as PSG took on Reims in the final fixture of Ligue 1 on Friday 24th. However, Mbappe managed to score just a single goal as PSG suffered a 3-1 defeat meaning Messi was confirmed as Europe’s leading superstar once more and will become the first player to win the award three times back to back.

This will be the sixth time Messi has picked up the award after becoming the first footballer to win the European Golden Shoe on five occasions last season, surpassing four-time winner Cristiano Ronaldo.
