Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka has opened up on the mood in the dressing room, after a heartbreaking 4-1 defeat at the hands of Chelsea in the Europa League final on Wednesday night.
Xhaka has now revealed that there was 'stone silence' in the dressing room after the loss, which means the Gunners will miss Champions League football next season.
The loss also meant the club’s 25-year wait for a major European trophy continued but will have another shot in the same competition next season.
“Yeah of course [it is painful] because I think we had a good season if you take off the five last games in the Premier League," he said.
“We had a second chance to come back and go to the Champions League but if you don’t take your chances, you will stay in the Europa League," he added.
Xhaka further expressed his disappointment that they were not able to qualify for Champions League through the English Premier League, after finishing outside the top four in the standings.
The team had a dismal end of the season campaign, losing key matches when it mattered most, including damaging defeats to Crystal Palace and Leicester.
In the end, they finished fifth on the log behind Chelsea and Tottenham, who occupied the remaining two spots to Champions League.
