Player Profile: PSL’s best Lorch

Futaa’s much-loved player profile feature has so far offered you players who do their business in European shores. We thought it is now time we profile a PSL footballer.

First up is none other than Orlando Pirates and the Absa Premiership’s finest Thembinkosi Lorch.

Reigning PSL Footballer of the Season

To counter any argument on whether Lorch is the league’s best player of not, the fact is Lorch is Mzansi’s Players’ Player of the Season and Footballer of the Season - thanks to 15 goals & five assists in 40 games.

But where did it all start?

Lorch was born in the small town of Bloemfontein or City of Roses 26 years ago. The player known as Nyoso first started out playing for his father’s team called Mountain Eagles in Ficksburg. He did not stay long before going on successful trials at third-tire side Maluti FET College. Lorch’s fateful break would take place during a performance that had Orlando Pirates scout Screamer Tshabalala in the stands. The rest would be history - including the iconic goal for Bafana Bafana against Egypt at AFCON 2019.

But the entry into the Pirates team would not be free from tests of patience and hope…

Lorch would spend the next three seasons on loan, first at National First Division side Cape Town All Stars before establishing himself in the PSL at Chippa United under Dan Malesela. Next was the permanent move to the Pirates senior team under Kjell Jonevret.

Strengths & style of play

With Lorch, we are talking about a player who can slot in any position in the front line, be it at 7, 8, 11, 10 or false 9. Nyoso enjoys a wonderful close control touch to turn & twist any defender. His ability to finish with either his right or left foot has been clear for all to see. Lorch possesses what many local coaches dream to have in any attacking player: composure.

Though not something he can do much about, Lorch is not one of the tallest attacking players you’ve ever seen. Therefore you do not expect him to smash in headers into the back of the net. In moments where Pirates are forced wide and with Lorch in a central position to receive a high ball feed, you can’t put your money on him to rise up to nod in a late winner.

What’s next?

For any player that has reached the pinnacle of individual success in the given domestic league, there are three general ambition left: winning the league title, becoming a regular international player (currently two official Bafana Bafana caps) or making the step up to European shores. At 26, Lorch still very much has age on his side to realize all three ambitions.

Meanwhile, Lorch’s first 2019/20 PSL game is on Saturday evening when Pirates welcome Bloemfontein Celtic to the Orlando Stadium at 6 pm.
