Ahead of their LaLiga opener against Athletic Bilbao, Barcelona head coach Ernesto Valverde has chosen not to risk Lionel Messi who sustained an injury before pre-season.
The Argentine injured his calf in training before his side's brief pre-season tour of the United States and has not yet returned to full training a day before his side visit Athletic. This happened on the first day of training after returning from his extended break due to his exploits in the Copa America.
Speaking in a pre-match press conference on Thursday, Valverde confirmed Messi would miss the clash, "We never like to risk any players and much less someone like Leo. He still hasn't returned to training with the team and while we are happy with his progress, individual training is very different to playing a match. We are going to wait and see."
