Barcelona ace Lionel Messi is a major doubt for the club's opening Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund next week.
The Blaugrana will open their campaign against the German opponents at the Signal Iduna Park on September 17 and will have to do so without their talisman.
The Argentine is currently recuperating from a calf injury he suffered shortly before the team jetted out for a preseason friendly against Napoli, and has not featured for the side this season.
He is also expected to sit out of their La Liga match this weekend against Valencia, despite coach Valverde initially indicating his starman will be back after the international break.
He continues to work on his own as he continues his rehabilitation, even though no exact date on his return has been revealed.
The club has suffered indifferent results in his absence, losing the opening match 1-0 to Athletic Bilbao, before a 5-2 come-from-behind victory over Real Betis in their second match.
They further dropped points again away to Osasuna, with youngster Ansu Fati playing a key role as they settled for a 2-2 draw.
Valverde might, however, receive a boost ahead of the two ties, with Luis Suarez set to make a return after an injury he suffered in their opening tie against Bilbao.
