Victor Ikpeba has something to tell the new wave. Ikpeba believes that many young players dangerously prioritize money too early.

The 1997 Africa Player of the Year says all focus should be set on the football. Money motivation should simply take a back seat.

“I think young players going abroad shouldn’t prioritize the money. What to do is, think about playing well and doing well, fight and work hard,” Ikpeba told Brila.

“When I started my career, I had those attributes of a hard worker. Mostly Today the players are carried away, they begin to think they’ve arrived after one deal.”

The man whose former clubs include AS Monaco and Borussia Dortmund, concluded with a bit of a warning. Ikpeba underlined that fact that football careers hardly last a decade.

“In football career, if you’re lucky you get ten or fifteen years, but more if you are not injury-prone,” Ikpeba concluded.

Ikpeba's full profile:

  • ACB Lagos, RFC Lüttich (youth)
  • Monaco (France)
  • Dortmund (Germany)
  • Real Betis (Spain)
  • RSC Charleroi (Belgium)
  • Al-Ittihad (Libya)
  • Nigeria national team (7 goals in 31).
