REPORTS: Xabi Alonso to replace Zidane at Real Madrid

Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez will replace coach Zinedine Zidane with Xabi Alonso if the Frenchman decides to leave the club according to reports from Spain.

According to Mundo Deportivo on Friday Pérez have come to the realization before the season even began that Zidane’s return to the club was a mistake and the Frenchman is not the man needed to restore Los Blancos to their former glories.

The 3-0 loss at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday in the UEFA Champions League didn’t help Zidane’s position at the club and a revolution is needed in the post-Cristiano Ronaldo era, which is where Alonso comes in.

Castilla Set Up

The 37-year-old former Madrid player was coaching in the club’s Castilla set-up before he left to take over at Real Sociedad B earlier this year, and Pérez is said to regret letting him leave.

If Zidane is sacked, Mundo Deportivo says Alonso is more likely to be offered the job than club legend Raúl-who coaches the club’s B team-due to his stronger character and greater tactical nous.

There is however a strong link with Jose Mourinho who is the leading the contender in the race should Zidane be sacked.

Real Madrid takes Sevilla away from home this weekend and another loss could be detrimental for Zidane and his bench.
