Enyimba defender Ifeanyi Anaemena still believes his side has a chance of advancing to the group stages ahead of the first round return leg fixture at Al Hilal on Sunday, September 29.
Enyimba were forced to a goalless draw in the first leg played at the Aba International Stadium.
“It is football and anything can happen, it doesn’t matter where we score, the most important thing is if we get a goal, and defend the goal, at the end of the day, we will get the needed result, it was disappointing that we couldn’t score at home, but not scoring at home does not mean we can’t score away, so we can get a good win there," the defender said on Punch.
Anaemena also mentioned that lack of league action is one of the major reasons affecting Nigerian teams on the continent as most of the players are still rusty due to the long break.
“It is quite unfortunate that the league is yet to start, because if the league had started before the CAF competition our teams would have done better. It really affected all the team, look at Kano Pillars and Niger Tornadoes, that is because they have not played competitive football before going for their CAF matches so that is really affecting us.”
Should Enyimba fail to win, they will have to slug it out in the CAF Confederation Cup group stage playoffs for a spot in the group stage.
