Real Madrid returned to the top of LaLiga table after battling a goalless draw with Atletico at the Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday night.
Both teams knew a win for either side will displace Granada and take them to the top of the table.
And Barcelona's 2-0 win at Getafe earlier on Saturday puts a little bit more pressure on both of these teams, who met in the preseason in the United States with Atleti winning a wild one 7-3 as Diego Costa got a red card after scoring four goals against Los Blancos.
It was truely a contest from start to finish and after just five minutes, Joao Felix slips Sergio Ramos with a lovely nutmeg and is flattened for his impudence. Ramos waves him to his feet, but it was a clear foul and he should probably have been booked.
The tempo of the game continued to rise and Atletico's first chance came in the 8th minute when Diego Costa, in his own half, lobs a simple ball through the inside-right channel for Joao Felix who scoots into the area, far too quick for Sergio Ramos, but the angle is fairly tight and he drags his shot wide of the far post.
Real Madrid also had their chance in the 23rd minute as a brilliant pass from Valverde released Hazard on the left. He moved into the area, slips Savic and hits a cross that takes a deflection and goes behind for a corner on the other side.
The first half ended on even as both teams walked into the dressing room with satisfactory looks.
The second half resumed with both sides fighting to end the Madrid derby in a win, but a now-tired Eden Hazard was pulled off for James Rodriguez in the 77th minute.
After that, Atletico appeal unsuccessfully for a penalty when Angel Correa goes over after a shoulder charge from Sergio Ramos. It was a risky challenge, but not strong enough for a penalty to be given.
Madrid had their best chance of the encounter when Kareem jumped high to head from a cross, but a great save from Jan Oblak kept Atletico on level terms.
Real Madrid began to slow things down as they know a draw would move them back to the top of La Liga table, a point ahead of Granada and Atletico.
And that was the outcome of the game, a goalless draw, and Real Madrid is back to the top of the table.
