In case you’ve forgotten, Joseph Molangoane is still a Kaizer Chiefs footballer and coach Ernst Middendorp has now had to explain the player's extended absence.
While Molangoane suffered a horrific leg break in August 2018, we’re still surprised he hasn’t played over a year later. Especially in last weekend’s double friendly games.
“It’s really, you know, I would love to see him on the field and really give him – and I’ve said it before – I believe I was very influential in terms of getting him an extension in June," Middendorp told Kick Off.
“But we have to be very clear structured, there are too many irritations in terms of his second broken incident. Basically, at the moment, the very clear message is that currently he is not prepared to play a competitive game.”
The German coach also made a rare and perhaps uncharacteristic admission of liking an individual player to the media.
“We work on it; he is working on it individually, there’s no doubt about it, but let’s be honest – I like this player and I would like to have him in but if it’s not working and going in a way where he can be competitive then we can’t use him. That’s the status in the moment,” Middendorp concluded.
Other players in Chiefs' injury room:
- Itumeleng Khune
- Nkosingiphile Ngcobo
- Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya
- George Malukela
- Reeve Frosler
- Samir Nurkovic.
Chiefs face Cape Town City in this Saturday’s Telkom Knockout last 16 game at 15:00.
