Lionel Messi has finally revealed why he found it tough to play against Virgil van Dijk after Liverpool eliminated Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals last season.
Liverpool staged an improbable comeback in the tie after going down 3-0 at Camp Nou in the first leg but emerged 4-0 winners in the return clash to book a slot in the finals. Messi scored a brace in the 3-0 win but struggled to assert any dominance in the second leg as Barcelona crumbled.
In an interview with Marca, Messi revealed why he struggled against van Dijk, "He is a defender that knows how to judge the timing and wait for the right moment to get in or hold on. He is very fast and big, but he has a lot of agility for his height.
"He is fast because of its great stride and is impressive, both in defense and attack because he scores many goals."
