AFC Leopards are still in the title race despite losing to Gor Mahia in the Mashemeji derby on Sunday, says club's captain Soter Kayumba.
Leopards suffered a 4-1 loss in the hands of Gor Mahia on Sunday in a Kenyan Premier League match staged at the MISC Kasarani. Kayumba believes Ingwe are still in the title race despite the loss and has urged the supporters to be behind the team.
"We are playing a league and not a tournament. The league has many games. You can, unfortunately, lose the derby and win other matches and eventually win the league. Just urge our fans to be patient and I know we will rectify our mistakes in the coming matches starting with Bandari on Thursday,” he told the club's official website.
"We played well in the first half but we didn’t convert our chances to goals. We started the second half slowly allowing our opponents into the game. After they scored their first goal, we went on the offensive but unfortunately, we were left exposed and they doubled their goals again."
Kayumba reflected on his side being denied a penalty that saw Ingwe fans protest.
"We had genuine penalty appeals but the referee waved us away and that took the wind out of our team," he added.
Andre Casa Mbungo's men are currently seventh on the log with 15 points and will face Bandari in the next KPL match at Mbaraki Stadium on Thursday 21st.
