Ten players who played for both Manchester City and Chelsea

Chelsea will travel to Etihad on Saturday for a Premier League clash against the defending champions, their first meeting this season.

Frank Lampard’s men are on a five-match winning streak in the league and seem to have put their early-season struggles behind them.

Pep Guardiola’s men, on the other hand, have struggled this campaign, and seem to be far from the complete team that won the league last season.

Ahead of the tie, we take a look at the players who have played for both of these two teams.

1. Frank Lampard

The Chelsea manager has interestingly represented both teams and its no brainer he is the first on the list. The Blues legend left Stamford Bridge as the all-time top scorer and was signed by New York City FC.

He joined City on a season-long loan, scoring 8 goals in 38 matches during his last days as a footballer. Among the eight goals, one was against his former side at the Etihad.

2. Nicolas Anelka

The Frenchman was part of a Chelsea side that tore through the Premier League for a number of seasons, playing up front alongside Didier Drogba and the likes of Salomon Kalou.

Prior to his move to London, Anelka played for City, when they were still average and didn’t have much going for them.

3. Kevin De Bruyne

The Belgian is the one who got away for the Blues. Bought from Genk in 2012, the then bright youngster was immediately loaned back to the Belgian side until the end of the season.

He was again loaned to Werder Bremen before Jose Mourinho sold him to Wolfsburg having made nine appearances.

Man City bought the playmaker in the summer of 2015 and has gone on to become one of the best signings for City in recent seasons.

4. Wayne Bridge

Bridge wasn’t a popular figure at the Bridge, but his feud with John Terry stands out. The left-back played for both Blues, and famously refused to shake Terry’s hand at Stamford Bridge in 2010, in a match the Cityzens won 4-2.

5. Shawn-Wright Phillps

Wright-Phillips had two stints at Manchester City. He started his career at the club before moving to Chelsea in 2005 and was back in Manchester again three years later.

6. Scott Sinclair

There isn’t much to write about the winger, but he never quite got his feet on the ground for both clubs. During his time at Chelsea, he was loaned out to Plymouth, Queens Park Rangers, Charlton Athletic, Crystal Palace, Birmingham City, and Wigan Athletic before signing for Swansea City in 2010.

He moved to City on a four-year contract having impressed at Swansea, but was also let go on loan to West Bron and later Aston Villa before ending up at Celtic.

7. Daniel Sturridge

Sturridge packed his bags from City and headed to the Bridge on a free having seen the arrival of a number of players including Robinho, Adebayor, and Carlos Tevez.

Injuries hit him hard and having fallen down the pecking order at Chelsea, he left for Liverpool in 2013 having made 96 appearances and scoring 24 goals.

8. George Weah

The Liberian president had brief stints with both the London side and the Manchester club in 2000. He famously won the FA Cup with the London side.

9. Willy Caballero

City signed the Argentine from Malaga in 2014 and played as a back-up for Joe Hart in his days at the club. He made 47 appearances for Manchester City in 3 seasons and won the League Cup in the 2015-16 season.

He, however, left for Chelsea in 2017 on a free, after City failed to renew his contract upon expiry. He has been at the club ever since and is happy to deputize Kepa Arrizabalaga having done the same with Thibaut Courtois.

10. Tal Ben Haim

The Israeli can play as a centreback or a right-back, and signed for Chelsea on a free and endured a painfully disappointing spell.

Ben Haim made 17 starts in all competitions for Chelsea during the 2007-08 season but failed to nail down a first-team place before making a switch to Manchester City.

He never had a successful stint at City either and went on to play for Sunderland Portsmouth, West Ham, Queens Park Rangers, and Charlton Athletic.
