South Africa’s U23 side needed penalty shootouts to defeat Ghana after the match ended 2-2 inside 90 minutes.

SuperSport United goalkeeper Mondli Mpoto was the hero after saving the decisive penalty in sudden death for SA to win 6-5.

With Egypt and Ivory Coast having already taken the two available spots for Africa in Japan, it was left for Mzansi and Ghana to battle it out for the final ticket in Egypt today.

South Africa opened the lead through Luther Singh on 16 minutes. It could have been 2-0 on 29 minutes when Keletso Makgalwa missed a glorious chance inside the six box when he fluffed his shot infront of the the goalkeeper.

A minute later Makgalwa was incredulously denied a penalty after he was hacked down inside the box but the referee gave nothing. SA went into the break with the 1-0 lead before Ghana equalized through a scorching belta from Evans Mensah on 50 minutes.

South Africa reclaimed the lead through substitute Makgalwa on 62 minutes with a volley. But Ghana grabbed a late equalizer through Samuel Gyabaa on 85 minutes to take the match to penalties.

South Africa’s Lyle Foster scored the sixth sudden death kick before Mpoto pulled a superb save that denied Emmanuel Cudjoe’s effort and sent SA to Japan in 2020.
