Bottom-placed Astana shocked Manchester United with a 2-1 win in the Europa League match played at the Astana Stadium on Thursday night.
United, who have already booked a place in the knock out stage had a relatively young team and started the match well, but surrendered a 1-0 lead at the break to go down 2-1.
Jesse Lingard scored the opener on the 10th minute, but the hosts equalized ten minutes after the break through Dmitri Shomko, before Di'Shon Bernard scored an own goal to gift the hosts their first win in the competition.
Before the opening goal, United had knocked on Astana's door on a number of occasions, coming close on the fifth minute as Lingard released Greenwood down the left-wing, who in turn fired a fierce shot that was palmed away by the keeper.
On the 10th minute, Luke Shaw started a lovely build-up, eventually laying off the ball nicely to Lingard, who rifled a shot into the bottom corner for the lead.
United should have scored a second 10 minutes later, but Lingard failed to apply a perfect finishing touch as the ball went over the bar.
The hosts then carved out a chance of their own on the 22nd minute, Rotariu latching on to a cross to the back post but fired wide from six yards.
Rotariu once again came close to equalizing just before the half-hour mark, but his shot whistled past the upright for a goal kick.
Lingard, who was having a good game, was back again just after the half-hour mark, but his ball took a deflection and looped over the crossbar.
Astana stun United
Three minutes after the restart, dangerman Rotariu forced Bernard into a hasty clearance, and the youngster almost sliced the ball into his own net.
The visitors then came closest to extending their lead on the 54th minute, but an unmarked Chong fumbled the ball over the bar in a big miss that proved costly.
They were meant to pay seconds later as Dmitry Shomko's half-volley ball went past Grant into the bottom right corner as United conceded for the very first time in this year's Europa League campaign.
Seven minutes later the hosts took the lead as an unfortunate Di'Shon Bernard deflected Rukavina's intended cross into his own net.
On the 77th minute, United almost pulled level but Gomes' pinpoint freekick that was going into the top corner was expertly saved by Eric.
A minute later, he made another remarkable save to deny Greenwood, who found himself unmarked inside the box.
There was little action in the dying minutes of the match as Ole Gunnar's men suffered their first defeat.
