Guardiola rules out Man City spending in January

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has ruled out signing players in the forthcoming January window.

City has been billed to bring in a defender in the short window after failing to replace former captain Vincent Kompany in the summer with Leicester City’s Caglar Soyuncu being a target.

But speaking ahead of their Tuesday league duel Guardiola said: “I don’t want any players in January. We could not sign a center-back (in the summer). Nico (Otamendi) continued and we decided to adapt Fernandinho in this position and that’s all.”

The manager, however, confirmed that the club was considering a renewal of Fernandinho’s deal which expires in June and intimated that they will have to replace David Silva in the future with the Spanish midfielder having confirmed that he was leaving the club in the summer.

“There will be a need to regenerate. David has confirmed he is leaving. Fernandinho doesn’t know, but it’s normal when players reach this age and stage in their lives. Of course we have to replace them (if they leave),” Guardiola said.

Champions City, who have slipped to third in the Premier League, 11 points behind leaders Liverpool, visit Burnley later on Tuesday.
