The Confederation of African Football (Caf) has officially invited Libya to this year's African Nations Championship (CHAN) finals in Cameroon.
Caf has been forced to look for a team to replace Tunisia who has withdrawn from the tournament that features local-based players. The North Africans said that clubs are reluctant to release their players for a tournament that falls in the middle of the league.
CHAN is not officially recognised by FIFA and clubs are not therefore obliged to release their players for national team assignments.
In a letter addressed to Libyan FA, Caf explains that since Libya lost to Tunisia in the qualifiers, they are the best-placed team to be invited to the tournament. Libya have until January 28 to confirm their participation.
Ethiopia was the original hosts of this edition but withdrew when it was moved from 2018 to 2020 as the Caf changed their calendar. Cameroon stepped in as hosts and will stage the tournament in various cities.
