The Absa Premiership’s second installment of the Soweto Derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs could potentially decide the 2019/2020 PSL title race.
Moving towards Africa's biggest derby on Saturday afternoon, where 90 000 tickets sold out on Monday, here are some of the key battles that could decide both the game and the title...
The Glamour Boys lead the title race with four points - while the Sea Robber lurk on third place with nine more games to the end!
Gabadinho Mhango vs Samir Nurkovic
This is the league’s top leading strikers meeting with a chance to become heroes. Pirates’ Mhango is ahead with 14 goals while Nurkovic closely chases with 11 strikes.
Both strikers had scored in the first round’s 3-2 win for Amakhosi and therefore have all the confidence to celebrate a goal come Saturday. The two strikers' starkly different styles will offer a fascinating battle where Mhango will look to run behind Chiefs' defence while Nurkovic will utilize his physicality as well as aerial prowess.
Fortune Makaringe vs Willard Katsande
Pulling the strings for the two sides will be Makaringe - orchestrating Bucs’ attacks from a deeper role - and Katsande - the all-action box-t-box horse in Amakhosi’s wing attack onslaughts.
For Chiefs to succeed on Saturday, they must find a way of preventing the fast attacking breaks controlled by Makaringe - a task falling under the responsibility of their captain, Katsande.
In possession, Katsande is the man to find Chiefs’ attacking full-backs such as Reeve Frosler and Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya.
Thembinkosi Lorch vs Reeve Frosler
Lorch became somewhat of a Soweto derby specialist with three goals in three games last season - while he also has three goals, three assists from wide left this season. With Frosler being Chiefs’ major attacking weapon, the right-back will also have his hands full defensively.
Frosler’s passing, crossing and set-pieces are the go-to going forward and there’s little doubt that he’s one of the best full-backs in Mzansi. And that’s why this duel is so interesting.
It won't be like two wingers hoping to out-do one another. It’s not even the traditional attacker vs defender battle. Instead, it’s two players looking to be the influence going forward, while knowing it’s their responsibility to stop their marker.
Neither man can push forward all game and leave the other free.
