Harambee Stars midfielder Duncan Otieno has given the difference between Kenya’s Mashemeji Derby and Zambia’s Kopala Derby.
Otieno moved to Zambia in October 2018 to join Nkana FC from AFC Leopards and in an interview with Madgoat Tv gave a comparison between the derbies of the two countries.
In featuring for Leopards, Otieno had the chance of coming against Gor Mahia in his time in the Kenyan Premier League with the player featuring in the Kopala Derby where Nkana comes up against arch rivals Power Dynamos.
“I think the last derby I enjoyed while in Kenya was the one at Nyayo Stadium where the game didn’t end. It was that tie that our fans had protested the Meddie Kagere penalty and I think it is one of the most tensed matches I was involved while in Kenya.
“The Mashemeji Derby however has in recent year not been as tensed as it used to be and the results have been more predictable in recent seasons. It is different in Zambia. Derbies are a serious thing season in season out. They are very unpredictable. Like this season we were beaten in the first leg but we were confident of revenging in the second leg before Corona happened,” Otieno said.
In the interview the midfielder further thanked teammate Musa Mohammed for helping him to settle in Zambia in his earlier days and has fond memories of the Shield trophy he won while still at Leopards.
