Aston Villa's quest to avoid relegation received a major boost after a stunning 2-0 win over Crystal Palace on Sunday evening.
The Villains needed the win to keep their hopes of survival alive, and they fought to the end for their first win the restart with Ahmed Trézéguet the hero, scoring both goals in each half.
Palace though looked the better side in the opening exchanges and were unlucky not to lead after eight minutes, as Mamadou Sakho bundled home after a set-piece, only for the goal to be canceled for handball in the build-up in yet another questionable decision by the VAR.
Mbwana Samata and Jack Grealish came close to opening the scoring but were denied as the visitors defended resolutely.
The goal finally came in the 44th minute as Ahmed Trezeguet found himself unmarked in the box to strike past the keeper a free-kick ball that was beautifully floated in.
Aston Villa almost got the chance to double their lead from the penalty spot after Patrick van Aanholt was adjudged to have committed a foul in the box, but VAR came to Palace's rescue as Martin Atkinson's decision was overturned.
The second goal though arrived on the 59th minute as Trezeguet once again reacted quickest to poke the ball low inside the right post for a 2-0 lead.
They held on for the win despite a late fight from the visitors, their first win in the last five matches.
There was some drama though after the match as Christian Benteke was shown a red card.
The three points also breathed fresh life into their survival hopes as they are now on 30 points, four off West Ham and Watford, who are tied at 34 with three matches to go.
