Vihiga United earned a promotion to the Kenyan Premier League top tier following a 5-3 victory on penalties against Kisumu All-Stars on Wednesday.
Kisumu Allstars headed into the clash with an advantage after securing a 2-1 victory in the first leg thanks to Willis Otenda's brace. Dennis Wafula managed to reduce the deficit for Vihiga United that turned out to be a consolation.
However, in the return leg, Vihiga leveled the scores, grabbing a 2-1 victory that forced the match to go to penalties. Erick Otieno had handed the hosts an advantage just before half time, making the aggregate 3-1. The visitors responded immediately through Denni Wafula before Patrick Okulo put his name on the score sheet, making the game level 3-3 on aggregate.
Vihiga registered a 5-3 victory on penalties to become the first team ever from the NSL to win promotion to the top-tier via the playoffs.
