Retired Argentine midfielder Javier Mascherano has denied reports linking him with a return to Barcelona.
There had been rumours that Barca was willing to take in the player as a cover-up for defender Gerard Pique who is set to be out for at least three months.
Mascherano responded to a tweet referring to information from Eduardo Inda in El Chiringuito that gave birth to the rumour, urging him to deny it.
“But please,” Mascherano tweeted in response. “There’s no need.”
With Samuel Umtiti and Ronald Araujo, both injured the only fit senior centre-back at the club is Clement Lenglet with the news coming just days after Mascherano had announced his retirement from football.
The midfielder who featured as a defender too represented Barca for eight years winning five La Liga titles, five Copa del Reys, three Spanish Super Cups, two Champions Leagues, two European Super Cups and two Club World Cups.
Apart from Barca, Mascherano played for River Plate, Corinthians, West Ham United, Liverpool, Hebei China Fortune and Estudiantes de la Plata too.
